The Marathon and Half-Marathon Route
The Algarve is one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. In this challenge you can start in Sagres amidst its many magnificent cliffs, and from where in old times the navigators consulted the gods before departing on a voyage of discovery of the world or you can join the challenge along the way.
You can embark on a voyage of discovery of what the Algarve coastline has to offer.
6 Legs of the marathon will see you paddling 156Km from Praia da Mareta in Sagres until Vila Real de Santo Antonio.
We expect that during the marathon legs you will develop a sense of camaraderie, friendship, and community, not to mention a personal sense of accomplishment!
As part of the ASMAA family, you are ensured to have fun - this event already promises to be one of the biggest and best ever events held in the Algarve. And combined with all the fun, you recognise why its important to safeguard our oceans, you'll know why we are working so hard to make this one of the best SUP events on the planet.
What to expect during the marathon
The Algarve SUP Festival is a combination of fun and race.
The idea is that you all paddle as a group supporting each other, just as we’ll be supporting our colleagues on land in each venue were they are gathering signatures for the petition and informing whoever is around on the day, of the risks that oil and gas exploration will bring to the Algarve.
Training is mandatory. Keep in mind that you aren't just training for yourself, you're training for everyone else too in order to make this event as quickly and safely as possible you all will have to work as a team. Please make sure you train effectively.
We have a lot of folks getting ready for this event, when you register you'll be part of this growing group of paddlers that will be here. We are limiting the number of participants in each of the races and other supporting events.
Conditions predicted are mixed, as in the Algarve during this period you could find the conditions to be hot with no wind, choppy waters, you could have a light breeze or we may get a southeaster wind, crazy quilts of boat wakes ... in short, we have no idea what we'll get on each day.
We will be monitoring the weather and will keep you informed of what we find out.
It could even be possible that we'll have to adjust the launch place if conditions require it or even postpone or cancel any of the legs of the marathon, half-marathon or any of the races and games.
Hydration and Nutrition
You are advised to bring your own supliments with you everyday, although we'll have some water, energy bars, and fruit on the boats. Water Safety Jackets are required and a spare paddle is a good idea too. We're anticipating that you could spend between 6 to 10 hours on the water every day, so bringing a sunscreen and a hat also makes sense.
For the family and friends there is lots they can do while they wait for you to land at the designated beach each day.
They can go sightseeing in the area, spend the day on the beach or participate in one of the games. There is plenty of activity planned both for athlets and for spectactors.
Just talk to us … we will guide you, your friends and family.
